Until
weeks before preparations for the 50th anniversary of reunification
heightened, the University of Buea (UB) had not come into the picture of the
celebrations, except probably preparing its students to participate.
But
when work on the Public Open-air Amphitheatre at Bongo Square, opposite the
Presidential Tribune, failed to be realised after several prescribed deadlines,
luck then shone on the University of Buea.
The
President of the National Organising Committee for the Celebration of the 50th
Anniversaries of Independence and Reunification, Minister, Director of Civil
Cabinet at the Presidency of the Republic, martin Belinga Eboutou decided that
the Open-air Amphitheatre at the University of Buea be rehabilitated and
refurbished to some of the commemorative activities.

The
entrance into the university was given great attention, given the magnitude of
the event and the calibre of personalities previewed to attend the series of
activities.
The
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Buea, Prof. Nalova Lyonga was thus on the
spotlight, her first baptism of fire being the successful organisation of the
Inter-religious service on the reunification on Sunday, February 16.
The refurbished
Amphi 750 of UB on Monday, February 17 hosted the Major Colloquium on the
Reunification of Cameroon, chaired by the Prime Minister and Head of
Government, Philemon Yang on behalf of the Head of State, President Paul Biya.
Prof.
Nalova Lyonga was this time called upon to coordinate the deliberations, as
heated as they were, to the admiration of many a participant.
Later
same day, UB hosted a grand religious music concert and the next day, its
Open-air Amphitheatre was graced by the personal representative of President
Biya, martin Belinga Eboutou as he watched the historic fresco on Cameroon,
“Forging ahead”, staged by actors and actresses from across the national
territory.
The
last of the activities at UB was a grand cultural festival on February 19.
The above
activities caused UB to postpone its convocation ceremony from December 15,
2013 to March 22, 2014. Ongoing first semester examinations were also suspended
and rescheduled for February 25.
The
success of all the events hosted on the campus of the University of Buea
credits the institution’s head, Prof. Nalova Lyonga who spent sleepless nights
to assure accomplishment.
