He told
state media that it was due to the fact that he could not comprehend how the
money (30.000 Euros) was stolen from a coded briefcase which he carefully hid,
that he opted for a sorcerer.
Following
the story line, the former Lion’s coach had to travel to France for medical
attention and to handle other personal issues. He reportedly had his bags
packed and his briefcase which he filled with Euro bank notes, before keeping
it in a supposed safe location. On Saturday, Akono left for the airport, got
his briefcase checked alongside other luggage he was travelling with, and then boarded
the plane for France. When he touched down in Versy, he still had his briefcase
with him. It was only when he wanted to pay his fare to travel to Vichy by
train, that he realised he had been robbed.
Confused
and frustrated when he realised the coded suitcase was not broken or forced
open, Akono wanted to take the next available flight to return to Cameroon, but
was convinced by his elder sister to stay.
As
recounted on state media by the victim, he contacted his wife back home, who
visited a witchdoctor. She was told that the money was stolen by Akono’s
confidant. She contacted officers of the national gendarmerie who arrested the
suspect alongside three others who have been detained at the state secretariat
for defence, SED since Tuesday July 15.
Quizzed
on why he was travelling with 30.000 Euros in cash, the former national team coach
said he was going to use it to pay for medical charges and for her daughter’s
trip to Canada. He also mentioned that he is not the first person to travel
with such huge sums of money.
